When I consult with brides about décor for their weddings, many brides think they need to use the colours of their bridesmaids’ dresses for their reception décor. However, this is not the case. In fact, I often advise brides to choose their décor based on their reception venue. Matching your venue to your décor is very important. Some venues are decorated with white walls and a more neutral décor, which gives many options in terms of colours and style choices. However, some venues have a very distinct style or colours, and certain décor styles or themes won’t look good in that venue. For example, if you are planning a trendy theme wedding with bright, bold colours, but your venue has a very traditional look, the styles may clash. If you determine your décor scheme based on the bridesmaids’ dresses, this might not work with the venue you’ve chosen, and as a result, the décor might look out of place, and not at its full potential.
I always recommend to my clients to look at the venue first, see what colour palette is there, and the style of the venue, and work with that. If your venue is a more formal space, then your décor should also be more formal.
You don’t need to match your venue exactly. You can bring in tones of what the girls are wearing, maybe a more muted version of the bridesmaids’ dresses, but it’s best to work with what is there and keep your colour palette soft and neutral. Bottom line: enhance the beauty of the venue and introduce colour in the details, which offers a more elegant look.
